Chiliz was founded in 2017 by Alexandre Dreyfus, who has over 20 years of experience founding and growing web-based companies. The company's mission is to establish fan tokens as a powerful new fan engagement and revenue generation tool for the sports industry.

Chiliz offers a unique model for fan engagement and participation in sports and entertainment. Each sports team or organization that partners with Chiliz has a limited supply of "fan tokens" that are offered to fans through an initial "fan token offering" (FTO). Fans can use the native CHZ token to purchase these fan tokens, which then grant them voting rights on certain team decisions through the Socios.com platform. This allows average fans to directly participate in the governance of their favorite clubs in ways that were previously not possible. Chiliz is constantly innovating new ways for fans to engage, such as establishing the Chiliz Blockchain Campus to drive blockchain adoption in sports and entertainment.

The Chiliz network utilizes a multi-chain approach, with the CHZ token available across Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain, and Tron blockchains. Fan tokens created on the Socios platform are minted on a proprietary Chiliz sidechain, which uses a proof-of-authority consensus mechanism. Proof-of-authority is commonly used by private blockchains with a limited number of known validators, providing high scalability and security for the Socios ecosystem. The CHZ token itself has also been audited by the blockchain security firm CertiK.
