Mozambique requested discussions about new loan program, IMF says

WASHINGTON, April 18 (Reuters) - Mozambique has requested the start of discussions with the International Monetary Fund about a new lending program, and those talks will begin soon, an IMF spokesperson said Friday.

"To better align IMF support with the new government’s priorities and vision, the Mozambican authorities have requested the initiation of discussions for a new IMF program," the IMF spokesperson said.

IMF staff visited Maputo February 19 to March 4, 2025, to discuss policy implementation under Mozambique's existing Extended Credit Facility, the spokesperson said. Mozambican authorities and IMF staff subsequently agreed not to proceed with reviews under the program, given Mozambique's request for a new program, they added.
