The Stacks project was started in 2017 by Muneeb Ali, who finished his PhD and released the original whitepaper. The early team had previously built protocols and apps on the Bitcoin blockchain before starting work on the Stacks project in 2017.
How is the Stacks Network secured?
The Stacks network is secured by the entire hash power of the Bitcoin blockchain. Stacks uses a novel consensus mechanism called Proof of Transfer which enables Stacks blocks to be secured by 100% of the Bitcoin hash power. This means that in order to reorder Stacks blocks or transactions, an attacker would need to reorg the Bitcoin blockchain.
What is the total supply of Stacks (STX)?
The maximum and total supply of Stacks (STX) is 1,818,000,000 STX. The circulating supply is 1,476,871,148 STX, which is 81.24% of the total supply.
