U.S. shares higher at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.58%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Consumer Services, Technology and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.58%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.75%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.02%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM), which rose 1.52% or 3.80 points to trade at 253.37 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) added 1.38% or 1.80 points to end at 132.03 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) was up 1.37% or 4.58 points to 339.58 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 1.43% or 0.28 points to trade at 19.36 in late trade. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) declined 0.93% or 0.47 points to end at 50.26 and JPMorgan Chase&Co (NYSE:JPM) shed 0.30% or 0.63 points to 206.60.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:WBD) which rose 10.37% to 7.66, Kroger Company (NYSE:KR) which was up 7.18% to settle at 55.20 and Axon Enterprise Inc (NASDAQ:AXON) which gained 6.30% to close at 384.51.

The worst performers were Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which was down 12.36% to 69.68 in late trade, Enphase Energy Inc (NASDAQ:ENPH) which lost 4.30% to settle at 105.83 and Wells Fargo &Company (NYSE:WFC) which was down 4.02% to 51.57 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Edgio Inc (NASDAQ:EGIO) which rose 118.70% to 2.14, Visionary Education Technology Holdings Group Inc (NASDAQ:GV) which was up 117.73% to settle at 4.42 and Oblong Inc (NASDAQ:OBLG) which gained 92.92% to close at 6.54.

The worst performers were Fulcrum Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:FULC) which was down 61.13% to 3.44 in late trade, ModivCare Inc (NASDAQ:MODV) which lost 59.12% to settle at 12.75 and Oncternal Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ONCT) which was down 59.09% to 1.70 at the close.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2136 to 672 and 89 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1987 rose and 1292 declined, while 160 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.


The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.50% to 17.07.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.78% or 45.30 to $2,587.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 2.79% or 1.88 to hit $69.19 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 2.24% or 1.58 to trade at $72.19 a barrel.

EUR/USD was up 0.56% to 1.11, while USD/JPY fell 0.39% to 141.80.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.41% at 101.24.
